Riga: Underrated Wooden Riga in Āgenskalns with a Guide
Discover the hidden side of Riga on this guided tour through the charming wooden architecture district of Āgenskalns.
The tour begins in the heart of Old Riga, where you will meet your guide before taking a local trolleybus across the Daugava River — one of the largest rivers in Europe that divides Riga into two very different historical worlds. While the right bank was traditionally home to German, Russian, and Jewish communities, the left bank became known as the area of Latvian workers, sailors, artists, and local life.
Latvians traditionally built their homes from wood, and Riga still has around 4,000 wooden buildings, making it one of the richest wooden architecture cities in Europe.
During the tour, you will explore beautiful 19th-century wooden houses, see one of Riga’s most impressive Neo-Baroque churches, and experience the authentic atmosphere of a neighborhood where artists and writers still live today.
After the walk, we return back to Old Riga by trolleybus.
This is a chance to see the real Riga beyond the tourist areas — peaceful streets, local stories, and the unique wooden heritage of the city.
